| Blue Water Rally News |
The Blue Water Rally passes through the Galapagos Islands every 2 years and we were delighted to hear news that Lonesome George may well become a father - at last! As the last of his line, George has sadly failed to find a mate for many years and there was a threat that his species would die out completely. After 36 years in captivity, George has recently amazed his handlers at the Darwin Centre in Galapagos by mating with one of his female companions.
A nest containing several eggs has been found and placed in incubators. It will be about 4 months before we know if the eggs bear his offspring. The good news is that at only 90 years of age George should be in his sexual prime, so there is hope yet!
