P1030515The Slocum 43 is a purpose-designed blue water cruiser and live-aboard, combining excellent engineering, performance, comfort and safety. The boat was designed by Stan Huntingford in cooperation with Cruising Yachts International and constructed to surpass the highest building standards set by the American Bureau of Shipping.

Neva’ is a proven ocean-going yacht which has already made two circumnavigations, the latest with her current owners. She was built in 1988 and has had two major refits before each of these extended voyages in 1999 and 2007. The latter work included new teak decks, standing and running rigging, generator, inverter, Monitor self-steering windvane, chart-plotter, dinghy and outboard. In her initial construction and in both refits, the priorities have been quality and safety.

‘Neva’ is a safe, comfortable boat both for living aboard and for passage-making, but she does not sacrifice speed for safety – this design is the same as that of the yacht ‘nnn’ which was placed second overall in the 2009 Ostar single-handed Atlantic race.

‘Neva’ has a cutter rig which gives many options for dealing with varying wind conditions. She has an inmast furling main, and furling genoa and staysail with all lines leading back to the cockpit where there are 5 Barient and Lewmar self-tailing winches. In addition to her primary sails she has a working genoa, second main and storm trysail; she is fitted with a carbon fibre spinnaker pole.

‘Neva’ is finished throughout with a traditional teak interior, teak and holly cabin sole and a soft vinyl headliner.  Headroom throughout is 6’ 6”” (2m) and there is an astonishing amount of storage space with full length hanging wardrobes, drawers, galley storage and numerous large lockers both beneath and outboard of the salon seating areas.

’Neva’ is designed for long-distance cruising, with massive fuel (130 gals) and water (160 gals) capacity, and she has been fully equipped with everything the ocean sailor might need for comfort : water-maker, generator, air-conditioning/heating and fridge/freezer.

She has a full B&G instrumentation including autopilot, ICOM VHF and SSB radios (with Pactor modem), Furuno radar, AIS, Northstar GPS, and Raymarine C120 chart-plotter.

‘Neva’ is designed to take her owners safely to the most remote places, and throughout there are back-up systems; for example, Northstar and Raymarine GPS; two depth sounders; a fridge/freezer that works on either engine or AC power; a Monitor windvane self-steering system and the B&G autopilot; battery charging from the engine, AC charger and wind generator; and AC power from shore power, generator or inverter.

The aft cockpit is spacious but secure, with extra height stanchions extending forward of the companionway to give added protection. It has a dodger with interlinked full-length bimini, and zip-in wrap-around sun screens. The wide side decks, mastguards and full length handrails provide security when working on deck.

The Yanmar 88HP engine delivers a generous amount of power. ‘Neva’ also comes equipped with 25kg Rocna bow anchor and 100m of hi-test chain, with a 20kg Bruce in reserve and a Fortress FX23 kedge. The Avon folding RIB dinghy and Tohatsu 6HP 4-stroke outboard were new in 2008.

In keeping with her distinctive traditional looks, ‘Neva’ has teak decks (replaced 2007), useful on-deck storage chests, marlinspikes, boom gallows, teak varnish finish throughout and ratlines from which to spot your way through coral reef passes.
