Although our news of the last few days has been somewhat sparse, it reflects the difficulties our Manager has had in obtaining e-mail access. Richard has been very busy handling yacht arrivals, refuelling and seeing Ralliers off on their tourist trips to the interior of the island. Gaia (Bob and Phyllis) arrived very late, having had the frustration of an enforced return to Phuket for an intermittent Autohelm fault.
As we all know, nothing is straightforward when it comes to electronics - the system worked perfectly to windward as they went back! However, they are now suffering from a rudder bearing problem, which requires a liftout on the local dock rail system. (There is no travelift in Galle.) Nonetheless Richard has everything in hand.
A New Boatyard and Marina
Given the difficulties with Gaia and the residual problems of the tsunami Richard was delighted to report the development of a new boatyard and pontoons, which will be in use by the time of our next Blue Water Rally (2009-11).
On 15 January Ralliers were invited to a ceremony to lay the foundation stone for the new boatyard (c/w travel lift!), together with the unveiling of a plaque where the new marina will be. The first pontoons (along the breakwater, with fingers towards the harbour) are already under construction and are expected to be installed in about 3 months. The rest of the marina will be dredged out of the waste ground/water area, closest to the port gates. The boat yard will beat the end of the concrete pier, on the side where yachts currently go alongside. These latter tasks are expected within a year. There will also be a bar/clubhouse and info office close to the pier base. It all looks very promising and work is forging ahead.
The ceremony was very high powered, attended by at least 2 Government Ministers, a General, Commodore, the Governors of 3 southern districts and the Sri Lankan leaders of the 4 foremost religions. Richard was interviewed for Sri Lankan TV on behalf of Blue Water Rallies and asked about the development. He had no hesitation in expressing his enthusiasm!
Early Departures
Although the majority of the fleet will be staying for a day or two, Glendora, Carelbi and Alamak set off on 20 January towards the Maldives. This followed a leg briefing covering the next leg of the Rally. On the evening of 20th there will be a farewell party at the Closenberg Hotel. More news soon.................................
