READY FOR THE OFF

Richard Bolt has reported today, Monday 14 November that the Leg Briefing for the Atlantic crossing from Tenerife was completed this morning at our host club the Real Club Nautico de Tenerife. Yachts and crews are now ready to leave by 17 November and have completed the various formalities for departure. Today's briefing covered all aspects of the crossing including routeing options, weather and the all-important radio net procedures that will keep the fleet together during their long passage of up to 21 days or more.

Each morning a designated "Net Controller" will call each yacht in turn and take down their position and any other information such as local conditions (useful to others who may be some distance away). In the evening a brief call is made to ensure each yacht is OK and after both these radio "nets" there is a general chat session between yachts, further cementing the bonds of friendship and mutual support which are developing between skippers and crews as they sail their voyage of a lifetime around the world.

We shall be sent an update from the Blue Water Rally fleet twice each week which we shall publish on our Page "Position Reports".

In the meantime a few shots from Tenerife to be followed by more notes from Tenerife at the end of the week.

A BUSY WEEK AND A NOISY SEND-OFF

As ever, Departure Week has been a busy one, with yacht crews completing last-minute preparations and final briefings and a social programme.

The Governor's Reception

A major highlight of Departure Week was the Reception given by the Governor, Sir Francis and Lady Richards at The Convent.  For many years the official Residence of the Governor of Gibraltar, the Convent is a beautiful historic building in the centre of Gibraltar.  Owners and their crews enjoyed cocktails in the impressive surroundings of the ballroom and had the opportunity to discuss the voyage not only with their host and hostess, but with other members of the Gibraltar community.  The next day the Rally was able to reciprocate with a visit by the Governor and Lady Richards to Gipsy Moth at Marina Bay.

Over and Under the Rock!

The Departure Week has also seen a number of tourism outings with a day trip to Ronda and its famous bullring and local trips around the Rock and plenty of photo opportunities with the other local residents - the Apes. There was also the chance for a second group of intrepid Ralliers to visit the Lower Caves and explore the subterranean world under the Rock itself.  We were delighted to be given a set of photographs by the Jahren family of "Blackbird", which we put here on the site.

For the unadventurous the early evening was spent at Albor's enjoying a wine-tasting as a prelude to placing duty-free orders and purchasing excellent Spanish wines.

Thanks to Christoph Rassy

On Wednesday Rally crews and the Support Team were welcomed by Christoph and Mai Rassy and their crew to a splendid buffet supper at Bianca's Restaurant.  There was an opportunity for crews to sit down together and to enjoy each other's company as a prelude to many such evenings to come.  There was even "live entertainment" when Hans, newly arrived crew member on Christoph's yacht "Bamsen", serenaded us with his special version of "My Way"!

A fantastic evening was had by all - thanks you so much, Christoph and Mai.

A Raffle for the Rally Charity

During the preceding 10 days Christine Diment had been selling tickets for the 2005-7 Rally Charity - the fisherman of Galle in Sri Lanka, which had been so badly hit by the tsunami on 28 December.  Thanks to the generosity of many local traders many wonderful prizes were won in the draw held during Christoph's party and a substantial sum of money was collected for the charity fund.

The Government Reception

Always the highlight of a Blue Water Rally at Gibraltar is the Government Reception hosted by the Minister of Tourism, The Honorable Joe Holliday.  It was held at The Mount, a beautiful colonial-style building high up on The Rock overlooking Gibraltar Bay and the Bay of Algeciras.  Crews were presented with a souvenir book marking the tercentenary of British Gibraltar and there were special gifts for the 3 Coulson children of "Clarabella".  They were delighted to receive toy apes, although their parents, Gerard and Monica, were slightly apprehensive about the realistic screeches that these produced and the prospect of some sleepless nights!

The Stephen Thomas Sailing Bursary and the Youth of Gibraltar

The Government Reception provided the opportunity for the Minister to announce that a crew place on Gipsy Moth IV will be given to a deserving young person during the Blue Water Rally.  The crew place will be funded by the Stephen Thomas Sailing Bursary, created to commemorate the life of Stephen Thomas, a founder Director of Blue Water Rallies, who sailed on the original Rally from Gibraltar to Gibraltar 1995-7.

Stephen made the first public donation to the restoration of Gipsy Moth, but tragically was killed a few weeks later during an Antarctic cruise on his own yacht.  A central aim of the Gipsy Moth circumnavigation with the Blue Water Rally is to provide the opportunity for young people to sail on her during her second voyage around the world.  For those young people it is a chance for them to sail on a unique part of our maritime heritage and to meet local peoples and learn more about our planet.

The Blue Water Rally is the sixth such event to leave Gibraltar and it is ten years since the first one that started here in 1995.  The directors of Blue Water Rallies and trustees of the Sailing Bursary feel that it would be particularly appropriate to mark this anniversary by offering a place to a young Gibraltarian - probably on the leg from Cairns to Darwin in Australia in September 2006.

In his announcement the Minister said, "I am sure that many of our youngsters will be keen to secure this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sail in one of the 20th century's most famous sailing carft.  Gibraltar has always had a long tradition of sea-based activity and this announcement is a recognition of this.  I hope that applications will be received from a wide range of young people."

Mount Gay Rum and a Gipsy Moth "Red Hat Party"

After a long day of final preparations crews were delighted to wind down as the guests of the Gipsy Moth and UKSA Project Team at a Mount Gay Red Hat Party at the Royal Gibraltar Yacht Club.  Bowls of rum punch and a fantastic range of tapas made the party go with a swing to the background sounds of Caribbean music.  CEO of the UKSA, David Green, hosted the event in person and introduced the regional representative of Mount Gay thanking them for their generosity.  Some presentations were made in Very Special liquid form and the partying went on till LATE.....

The Last Day before we leave...

Normally there is an embargo on partying on the last day.  However, everyone is delighted to be the guests of GH Insurance, who have provided insurance cover for so many of the yachts and their crew members.  Robert Stevens, a director of GH, is hosting a cocktail party at Marina Bay as the sun sets and a local band provides background music.

A Noisy Send-off

Our next report will be written after Departure Day, Sunday 30th October.  The "weather gods" are promising very reasonable conditions and light winds later from a northerly direction sending the yachts on their way to Tenerife.  There'll be plenty of pyrotechnics and noise at Europa Point at 10 o'clock........

22 Rally yachts visit Marina Smir in Morocco

On Saturday 22nd October 22 yachts set sail from Gibraltar in a gentle Force 3 westerly breeze and a flat sea. As the rally yachts reached across the Straits of Gibraltar, it proved to be ideal conditions for a shake-down cruise and testing all the SSB radios prior to the departure for Teneriffe on Sunday 30th October.

Once everyone had checked in to Marina Smir, it was a short coach journey to Tetuan where there was an opportunity to wander through the souk and experience all the different aromas and colours of the fruit and vegetables on sale. This was followed by a demonstration in the famous carpet "hall" and an chance for some of the ralliers to purchase rugs and carpets. After this, there was a visit to the tannery and a spice and herb shop with an introduction to some of the benefits and healing qualities of these different powders and ointments and, once again, a chance to purchase some.

The day was rounded off by a meal in a Moroccan restaurant with traditional kebabs and cous-cous. A fire-dancer displayed his skills and was very willing to perform for the cameras. On Sunday the fleet of yachts returned to Gibraltar with a spanking sail in a westerly force 5, enabling a fast reach back to Marina Bay in time for sun-downers. It was a most successful week-end with the opportunity for the rally yachts to sail together for the first time and to get to know each other in relaxed circumstances.

FIRST WEEK OF PREPARATIONS AND A MINI RALLY TO MOROCCO (Posted 22 Oct 05)

The auguries were not particularly good at first when the Support Team left Gatwick Airport for Gibraltar in foggy conditions, only to arrive over Gibraltar in even worse weather and have to divert to Malaga Airport in Spain. A three and a half hour journey saw a somewhat jaded Peter, Tony and Annette arrive late that night. Things were quite different the next morning when the Blue Water Rally office was opened at the premises of our friends, Allabroad Sailing in Marina Bay. Close by bathed in bright sunshine were over 20 Rally yachts proudly flying their Rally battleflags.

As ever, things were soon busy at the office with owners visiting to register and fill out the inevitable paperwork. Copies of the busy Departure Fortnight Programme were handed out signalling the buildup to Departure Day on 30th.

Briefings and visits to yachts
Inevitably a world voyage has to include a number of briefings and Rally Directors, Peter Seymour and Tony Diment, were soon busy getting owners and their crews "up to speed" on a range of subjects, including Voyage Administration, Safety and Communications. Thanks to the close association the Rally enjoys with the Royal Gibraltar Yacht Club, briefings were held each morning in their waterside premises overlooking the bay. Afternoons were spent with individual yacht preparations and visits by the Rally Directors for one-to-one discussions on safety and individual communications equipment. It was also an opportunity to introduce Richard Bolt, who was taking an active part in the Gibraltar programme and will be a manager at many stopovers as part of the Support Team.

Gipsy Moth and yachts of 8 nations
The Blue Water Rally 2005-7 has a number of highlights - 23 yachts from 8 nations joining in Gibraltar and a further 10 later in the Caribbean. For their part Blue Water Rallies are particularly proud to see Gipsy Moth on the "startline" at Marina Bay on her way to marking 40 years since Sir Francis Chichester's circumnavigation and Peter, Tony and Annette's 10 years of organising world cruising rallies.

Not all work and no play!
A busy week for everyone but nonetheless time for fun, too. On Tuesday 18 October the Support Team gave a drinks party at the Royal Gibraltar Yacht Club for Rally crews. On the verandah of the Club crews got to meet each other, sometimes for the first time, and started to create close bonds of friendship which have always been a mark of Blue Water Rallies. The wine and beer flowed and the Club staff produced two ENORMOUS pans of paella to feed the hungry group. Later there was dancing to a disco.

The next evening Marina Bay provided an excellent sundowners' party at the Little Mermaid Restaurant and provided another opportunity for crews to get together.

Tourism and a mini Rally
The Departure Fortnight at Gibraltar provides a number of opportunities for Ralliers to leave their yachts and see something of historic Gibraltar with its famous Rock and underground tunnels. The first of two "expeditions" by Rally crews to the Lower Caves (natural cave systems seldom visited by the general public) took place on Friday.

However, the weekend of 22/23 October sees a traditional highlight of the Departure Fortnight - a mini Rally by Blue Water yachts across the Straits of Gibraltar to Smir Marina in Morocco. Crews left very early on Saturday 22nd and on arrival at Smir will be travelling by coach to Tetouan to see something of Moroccan culture - a souk and an opportunity to bargain for souvenirs followed by a traditional meal in the souk with a belly-dancer! After a night back in Smir and a leisurely morning, yachts will cruise back to Gibraltar to their berths in Marina Bay. The forecast is for light winds and bright sunshine so crews will already start to build up their suntans which will stay with them for the next 20 months!

Into the second week - Dressing Overall
To mark the week of departure, yachts will "dress overall" in accordance with maritime tradition, lining their yachts with flags from bow to stern over their mastheads, making Marina Bay a most colourful sight. The week's programme includes an enjoyable mix of social activities, a visit to Spain and further preparations for the Great Day.

We shall produce a further report later next week. All's well here at Gibraltar!

Rally Support Team waves Gypsy Moth off from Plymouth

Gipsy Moth IV has completed her £300,000 makeover in preparation for her participation in the forthcoming Blue Water Round the World Cruising Rally.

Rally Director Peter Seymour and Rally Secretary Annette Seymour were on board one of the flotilla of boats, with horns sounding and flags flying, which escorted her past Plymouth Hoe where hundreds of people cheered her off to the start of the Rally in Gibraltar.

The same Gypsy Moth biplane that flew out to meet Sir Francis when he returned from his record breaking voyage flew across Plymouth Sound and escorted Gipsy Moth IV out of Plymouth's water. The plane was flown by Nigel Reid, son of John Reid who made the memorable flight back in 1967.

FIRST ARRIVALS AT GIBRALTAR : Update 14th September 2005

A number of our Blue Water Rally yachts had arrived at Gibraltar by 14 September. Most have had excellent passages. Although Nicholas Pochin reported 40-knots over the deck during his single-handed delivery of his Discovery 55 from Mallorca!

Others have had a much easier time, including two French participants, Jacques Demarty and Bernard Rocquemont. Jacques on "Fleur de Mer", a Bowman 40, left Hamble after final preparations there on 16 August. As with most crews he had an enjoyable sail down the Spanish and Portuguese coasts, arriving at Marina Bay on 31 August.

Bernard on "Paulina III" arrived a few days earlier and is now also safely moored in Marina Bay. "Paulina III" is a brand-new catamaran built in France for the Blue Water Rally and we include 2 photographs sent to us by her proud owner! First of many which we shall doubtless receive from participants from now on and which we shall be displaying on our website.

We look forward to receiving more arrival reports over the coming weeks.

BLUE WATER RALLY 2005-7 YACHTS HEAD FOR GIBRALTAR

Although Gipsy Moth IV will not depart for Gibraltar until 25 September, most of the 23 yachts leaving from there on their world voyage were under way by early August (a further 9 yachts will join in the Caribbean later in the year).  Some had joined the Biscay Triangle to sail the first leg to La Coruña in northern Spain, while others were sailing independently from NW Europe and Mediterranean ports.   Many owners have met already by attending the special Owners’ Seminars held in Southampton earlier in the year.  All will start to establish those very special bonds of friendship when they assemble at Gibraltar at the start of the Departure Fortnight (17-30 October).

Celebrating 10 years of World Cruising Rallies

Gibraltar has a special place in the hearts of mariners, particularly this year, the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Admiral Nelson.  Blue Water Rally Directors, Peter Seymour and Tony Diment, will also be celebrating 10 years of organising round the world cruising rallies with this, the 6th world rally they have organised since 1995.  One of the many events at Gibraltar will be a “Ten-year Birthday Party”.  Joining the members of the 2005-7 Rally will be past participants in the Trade Winds Rally 1995-7, organised by Peter and Tony, making the final weekend a very special one for all concerned.

A Busy Programme and a “Rally within a Rally”

The Departure Fortnight programme is a mix of briefings, social activity and tourism.  During the first week crews will have safety discussions and radio checks on their yachts and a number of shore-based briefings on safety, communications and administration.  Most crews will also take part in the popular rally to Smir in Morocco, which takes place during the middle weekend. Departure Week opens with Rally yachts being dressed overall, making Marina Bay a particularly colourful sight as crews make final preparations for their world voyage.  Apart from briefings for the first leg to Tenerife there will be time this week for tourism around and under (yes, under!) the Rock and into Spain.  The Gibraltar Government will be hosting a Reception for Rally crews and there will be plenty to keep them occupied with victualling and preparing their yachts for their Great Day – Departure Day, 30 October.

Departure Day

As the Blue Water Rally is a cruising-only event, owners and organisers will decide on Saturday, 29 October, whether to go ahead with the formal departure the next day.  Nonetheless, all being well, Blue Water Rally yachts will set sail off Europa Point at 1000 hours local time, signalled by the roar of a field gun fired by a gunnery team of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment.
